Set within a 70-hectare former castle estate near Antwerp, Ternesse Golf & Country Club is defined by mature trees, water features and an expansive parkland landscape. For MAZU, it became the perfect setting for our first project realised entirely in corten steel.

The material was a deliberate choice. With its warm, weathered surface and robust character, corten steel creates a natural connection between the architectural environment of the clubhouse and the surrounding golf course. Rather than contrasting with the landscape, the planters are designed to become part of it.

At the heart of the installation stands a MAZU Oyster Large in corten steel. Its sculptural, organic form acts as the statement piece of the project and demonstrates how the distinctive Oyster silhouette takes on an entirely different character when executed in raw, weathering steel.

Across the terrace, MAZU Tank Medium planters in corten steel create rhythm and continuity. Their clean architectural lines complement the more expressive Oyster while defining the outdoor hospitality areas without interrupting the open views towards the golf course.

The project was realised in collaboration with Gingko Gardens, responsible for the landscape architecture and garden maintenance. Together, the planting, material selection and positioning of the planters were considered as part of the wider landscape rather than as individual decorative elements.

Ternesse also became an important project in the evolution of MAZU. It demonstrated how an entire outdoor environment could be shaped around one material and a combination of different MAZU collections. The success of this approach later led to a similar corten steel concept for Herakles Hockey Club.

For MAZU, Ternesse shows the strength of corten steel in landscape architecture: robust enough to make a statement, yet natural enough to become part of its surroundings.
